ARRESTS for domestic violence have almost doubled in the Fareham area after a change of police policy.
Graham Tann, Fareham police's domestic incidents manager, said the changes in tackling the 40-50 incidents reported every month had come after domestic violence was made one of the government's top three reducible crimes.
Between April and December 1999, arrests were made in only 32.6 per cent of reported domestic violence incidents but that figure has risen to 62 per cent so far this year.
Mr Tann said: "Officers are policing domestic incidents more robustly and are separating the parties involved so at least the victim is more likely to complain to us about what has happened."
He said alleged perpetrators were now often arrested and taken to the police station to allow the victim an opportunity to talk to officers in confidence about their home life.
"We can tell victims about help and support available from us and in the community, but if at the end of the day they do not want to make a complaint we might send the aggressor home with a warning."
Pam Bryant, chairman of Fareham Borough Council's crime and community safety panel, said: "I think this is very worthwhile - my eyes have been opened. When people are in such situation it is a fearful type of crime and they are not always sure whom to turn to for help."
