THE world of amateur operatics owes a debt of gratitude to Sir Arthur Sullivan.

Southampton Operatic Society certainly does. If it wasn't for the astonishingly popular works he composed with W S Gilbert, which have formed the backbone of the group's output for the last 76 years, the society as we know it probably wouldn't even exist.

By way of thanks - and as a tribute to Sullivan on the 100th anniversary of his death - the respected company will be staging a celebratory show packed with highlights from the Gilbert and Sullivan back catalogue.

The adult members of the group will be joined by the society's junior section for the event at the Turner Sims Concert Hall on October 21.

"The works of Sullivan and his main collaborator have provided the staple fare for the society's productions over the past 76 years," says producer David Rayner.

"It would be true to say the society's reputation as the region's leading light opera performer is based on our interpretation of the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas."

G&S fans will be delighted to hear the society has included at least one musical item from each of their operettas in the show, starting off with Trial by Jury and ending with Grand Duke. Along the way, they take in some all-time favourites, including Pirates of Penzance, The Mikado and HMS Pinafore, and some less well-known Sullivan compositions, such as extracts from his opera Ivanhoe.

"Arthur Sullivan was Queen Victoria's favourite composer," says David.

"The aim of this concert is to show why and ensure that his marvellous compositions will continue to be performed well into the next centenary."

Tickets cost £6 and are available from the box office on 023 8059 5151.
