Hampshire still have three clubs with an interest in the Tetley's Bitter Vase following Saturday's second round games.

Overton were given a walk-over by their intended hosts, Arun, while Fordingbridge defeated Fareham Heathens and Southampton Institute won at Eastleigh.

Fordingbridge's amazing run in 2000 continued when they beat Heathens 27-11. After a tight first-half, Fordingbridge led 13-6, John Walkman having landed a couple of penalties and the conversion of a try from John Stockley and Heathens having replied with a penalty from James Martin-Redman and a drop goal by Andy Hopper.

Fordingbridge then added two further tries through Walkman and Robin Padfield, both improved by Walkman, while Heathens added a try by Brian Peach to their tally.

Southampton Institute were reinstated in this competition when Fleet were found to have played an ineligible player and the students took full advantage of the situation by winning the second round game at Eastleigh 10-0.

The Institute took an early lead with a converted try and sealed victory with a late penalty after a dour cup-tie, fought out in awful conditions.

The students deserved to win because they used what ball they had and tackled well when Eastleigh were driving forward. Eastleigh had the opportunities but failed to utilise them, even once failing to touch down after their pack had driven the students back over their own line.

The remaining Hampshire side in the Vase, Kingsclere, lost 15-12 at Haslemere while over in Dorset, Oakmedians accounted for Poole 22-10 but Lytchett Minster lost 27-25 at Topsham.

In friendly fixtures, Trojans (Russell Clark, Richard Witham tries; Nigel LeBas penalty) lost 15-12 to Portsmouth II (Neil Styles, John Garratt tries; (conversion, penalty).

New Milton (Treve Whitworth try; Matt Wale conversion, 2 penalties) gained a morale-boosting 13-8 away success at Esso II.

Isle of Wight held Sandown & Shanklin to a 5-3 winning margin in their local derby game, Steve Lucy replying with a penalty to Sandown's earlier try.
