CUTTING through the water with the greatest of ease comes the ship that could revolutionise naval warfare.

The RV Triton is a testament to the skills and imagination of designers and craftsmen at Vosper Thornycroft's Southampton shipyard. But as the unique triple-hulled warship began two years of sea trials, words of praise from the captain handed the task of piloting her will be little comfort to the 650 workers who received redundancy notices this week.

That bombshell and the approval of plans to relocate work from the Woolston yard to Portsmouth Naval Base has led to fears that this could be the last great vessel in Southampton's proud maritime history. A union leader even went as far to say that the move would rob the British Navy of one of the biggest and best shipbuilders in the world.
