Swimming classes at a New Forest recreation centre are booming because worried parents are reacting to drowning tragedies this summer.

So say teachers at Applemore Recreation centre, Hythe, who have seen dozens of water babies sign up in the last few weeks for the Southern Water Learn to Swim Scheme.

Applemore instructor Ross Archibald said: "Tragic drownings of young children recently, plus schools cutting back on swimming lessons, have reminded parents of the importance of ensuring that children have the necessary skills to be safe in water.

"This is particularly important when we live by Southampton Water. Drowning is the third biggest cause of accidental death," he said.

Learn to Swim sponsor Patrick Trant of the Rushington-based developers, said : "I welcome the increasing numbers joining the scheme.

"We want to see more parents learning to swim, too, because swimming really is a gift for life."

The scheme is open to youngsters aged 4-12, who each receive a swimming bag, badges and certificates.

Applemore Pool closes for refurbishment on November 13, until Christmas Eve.
