A MAN was being questioned today by murder squad detectives in connection with the death of his brother when a birthday turned to tragedy.

Boat builder Adrian Selmes suffered fatal head injuries following an incident at the home of his parents in Warsash.

He was caught up in a fight in the early hours of yesterday morning after celebrating his 29th birthday on Saturday.

His 23-year-old brother Paul is being questioned by police at Fareham station in connection with the death.

Mr Selmes was rushed to Southampton General Hospital shortly before 2am yesterday but pronounced dead on arrival.

Mr Selmes, who lived in rented accommodation at a house in Crowsport, Hamble, with his girlfriend, was at his parents' home in Dibles Road when the incident occurred.

Neighbour Mick Cable, 59, said he heard noises from the house next door.

"It was about half past one in the morning when I heard a big noise and lots of shouting and arguing. It sounded pretty serious. The next thing I heard was someone call for Mrs Selmes, Adrian's mum.

"Then Mr Selmes came downstairs and I heard him say 'Oh my God' and an ambulance was called."

The Selmes family, who have lived in Dibles Road for just a few years, are understood to be connected to the yachting industry and it is believed the victim's father and other son Paul work together.

An unfinished boat sits in the front garden of Adrian Selmes's house in Hamble. Last night his home was deserted, but inside the property were birthday greetings cards from friends and family. Householders in Crowsport said they did not know the dead man.

Police have arrested a 23-year-old man in connection with the incident. The case is being led by Detective Inspector John Ashworth, of Fratton CID.
