SINGER Cliff Richard has helped make sure it's everyone for tennis at schools all round the New Forest.
More than 1,500 primary pupils in the district were able to take part in the Cliff Richard Tennis Trail - a free scheme aiming to encourage the sport and spot potential stars.
At Pennington Junior School, near Lymington, all 204 pupils were put through their paces by the Tennis Trail team, headed by Julie Williams.
She said: "We watch the children closely as they work, looking out for above average co-ordination and speed.
"We aim to give the children a taste of tennis, and show staff how they can teach the sport to a class of 30 primary kids.
"When we leave, the school keeps a set of equipment worth £700, and the children will get 20 hours' follow-up coaching from a local tennis teacher," said Julie.
The Cliff Richard Tennis Trail - launched by the singer in 1992 - is partly financed by a celebrity pro-am tournament in which Sir Cliff is a keen competitor.
He said: "Children will discover a game they can enjoy throughout their lives -- if we catch them young and keep them motivated. The work we are doing at grassroots level is crucial."
Pennington's head teacher Hilary Flaxman agrees. "It is a wonderful opportunity for the children. Our staff are watching the sessions today, and getting involved, and we have a huge box of equipment to carry on the good work," she said.
Other New Forest schools visited by the Tennis Trail include Ashley Junior, and primary schools in Hordle, Tiptoe, Milford and Sway.
