THE LIBERAL Democrat's new leader, Charles Kennedy, received a warm welcome from the party faithful in Eastleigh yesterday.

Mr Kennedy addressed members at the closing of the Liberal Democrat Southern Regions conference at the Forte Posthouse Hotel.

Around 200 people from across the South heard their leader talk about how his life had changed since he stepped into his new role in mid-August.

Mr Kennedy also described meeting the Chinese president and his recent visit to No 10 Downing Street, as well as talking about the Britain in Europe campaign.

He had been greeted by Eastleigh MP David Chidgey, who took part in a question-and-answer session during the conference.

Party president Baroness Diana Maddock addressed the conference, which aimed to gauge grass root views of the Liberal Democrats' future direction.
