Southampton 1 Liverpool 1
Titi Camara hit a late equaliser for ten-man Liverpool to deny Saints victory just a minute after Michael Owen had hobbled off with a recurrence of his hamstring injury.
It could be bad news for Englands Euro 2000 play-off against Scotland next month and it left Liverpool a man short with all three substitutes already used.
But the Merseysiders rallied and Camara drove home a loose ball from 20 yards to cancel out the 39th-minute opener from Trond Soltvedt who forced home from close-range following a knock-down by Matt Le Tissier, who reacted angrily to being substituted early in the second half.
But Saints almost won it in the closing stages. Stuart Ripley produced a superb turn past Staunton and delivered a great cross which Hassan Kachloul headed inches wide and, in injury-time, Marian Pahars had a looping header tipped over the bar.
Dave Jones yesterday denied rumours Liverpool had offered Saints £5 million and defender Steve Staunton in return for Moroccan international Hassan Kachloul.
