Paul Jones aims to exorcise a few more ghosts tomorrow as Saints go for a quickfire double over Liverpool at The Dell.

Last week's dramatic Worthington League Cup win over the Merseysiders went some way towards easing the pain of the seven goals Jones picked out of his net at Anfield in January.

And if Saints can follow up their cup success with three Premiership points then the Welsh keeper will feel the score has been settled. But he knows that the Reds will now be on a revenge mission of their own.

He said: "After the 7-1 drubbing, it gave me a lot of personal satisfaction to beat them in the cup.

"But after that result Liverpool will be up for this one for sure, especially as we got our winner so late and they missed a few chances to win.

"Michael Owen had a good opportunity late on but shot wide when normally you would expect him to hit the target. Hopefully he will be the same tomorrow. After that he can go on and start scoring again!

"The cup win was very satisfying but we really need the points. We have only taken two from the last five games even though we have been playing reasonably well. We just need to make sure we defend a bit better and don't switch off."

It is a cry echoed by manager Dave Jones who is looking for his side to rediscover their momentum after slipping towards the fringe of the relegation zone in recent weeks.

He said: "We have half an eye on the teams below us - but we also have half an eye on the ones just above us because it is very tight there too. A couple of wins would lift us right back up into the top half of the table.

"It is a big, big game tomorrow. If we beat Liverpool it will put us level with them and stop them opening a big gap over us.

"They will be out for revenge for the cup defeat. They will be smarting - but so are we because we know we have not played to our full potential in recent weeks. We want to show last week's victory was no fluke."
