Saints had substitute Kevin Davies sent off as two defensive errors sent them sliding to defeat at Leicester.
Davies received his marching orders for a reckless lunge of Gerry Taggart who was stretchered off 15 minutes from time.
As tempers flared late on, Saints thought that Hassan Kachloul had also been dismissed when referee Barry Knight showed him a second yellow card for a foul on Robbie Savage, only to realise he had not previously booked the Moroccan!
Saints though did not deserve anything from the game after going behind on seven minutes to a soft goal volleyed in from close range by former Colden Common winger Steve Guppy.
Tony Cottee prodded in the second seven minutes before the interval and Saints tried to get back into it by sending on first Matthew Le Tissier and then the ill-fated Davies.
Marian Pahars scored his third goal in as many games on 83 minutes with a volley.
