Paul Jones will volunteer to try and score a spot-kick as well as save one if tonight's home game against Liverpool goes to sudden-death.

The Worthington League Cup third round tie must be decided at The Dell which means extra-time and even penalties if the scores are level.

If that happens then the Saints keeper certainly won't be fazed. He has already been the hero of two previous penalty shoot-outs.

He helped Wolves to a memorable FA Cup win over Sheffield Wednesday four seasons ago but had even more impact when Stockport faced Crewe in the area semi-final of the Auto Windscreens Shield a year later .

Jones not only kept the home side out but then scored the winning penalty and he laughed: "If need be I'll certainly be up for it again tonight.

"I hope we can win in 90 minutes but if it does go to sudden-death then count me in. I will definitely volunteer to take one.

"That winner against Crewe was the only one I have taken in a competitive game and I'm not saying where I put it in case any of the Liverpool players are reading this!

"But it was a nice feeling to get the headlines for scoring one rather than for saving it. It was a great moment as all the lads jumped on top of me."

Manager Dave Jones is preparing a side to win in normal time but he won't be relying solely on penalty king Matthew Le Tissier if there is a shoot-out.

He said: "There will be no shortage of volunteers if it does go to penalties. Among others we've got the likes of Jason Dodd, Marian Pahars, Hassan Kachloul and no-one will fancy trying to get the ball off Paul Jones!

"In any case I hope we can win it in 90 minutes but we will have to earn everything we get. Liverpool will pass the ball well so we will have to work hard to close them down.

"We are full of confidence and we know we are playing well right now. But if we get in front we need to make sure we kill the game off this time."
