COMPTON lost their Hampshire League Division 2 basement battle against Awbridge on Saturday - and probably their manager as well.
Long-serving boss Mick Kooner has given notice to quit, revealing that pressure of work - he has a car and hairdressing business - is preventing him giving the time to the Compton job that it needs right now.
Kooner has twice hauled the village club from the brink of Hampshire League extinction and they are again facing another crisis through shortage of quality players. "We desperately need someone new to come in and bring some new blood with him," says Kooner.
A 3-0 defeat against Awbridge - Awbridge's first league win of the season - came after Compton had two strong penalty appeals turned down in the early stages of the game. Kooner couldn't believe it when the ref waved play on after Daniel Keyworth was felled after sidestepping four challenges.
Clanfield celebrated the opening of a new £160,000 clubhouse, built with the aid of a lottery grant, with a 3-2 victory over Winchester Castle in Division 1. Roger Moore took his tally to 16 goals with a brace, the second one deciding the game in the last 12 minutes.
Vosper Thornycroft have put a bad start behind them. They reeled off their third straight win as Jason Adams (2), Mark Dyer and Andy Patterson eased them home 4-2 against Fleet Spurs.
Bishop's Waltham stormed into the top six in the Premier Division with a 4-2 win over defending champions Alton Town. Simon Crook hit two swift goals for Bishop's but Alton were back on terms before the interval. Antony Pink and Dean Cole sealed the win in an even second half.
Andy Neale converted two penalties as Liss squeezed out Colden Common 3-2 and Lymington Town hit back from two down at half-time for a 2-2 draw with New Street. Dave Perrett getting both for the New Forest side, one from the penalty spot.
Brading Town lost central defender Russell Phelps with a dislocated knee cap but still saw off Stockbridge 3-0 thanks to goals from Lawrence Edmondson, Pete Morris and Adam Sunsberg.
Steve Trott is doing the business up front for Pirelli General after switching from a midfield role. The ex-Eastleigh man scored both in a 2-1 Russell Cotes Cup win over Winchester City. Wayne Ghosh was the two-goal hero of Hamble Club's 3-0 Hampshire Intermediate Cup conquest of AFC Solent.
