TOP public school Winchester College has appointed its new headmaster.
Dr Nicholas Tate, who is presently chief executive of the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, will take up the post in September 2000.
Dr Tate, who is 55 and married with three children, succeeds James Sabben-Clare.
The new headmaster, who is not an old boy of the school, was picked from a shortlist of candidates. He has published books on history and education.
Mr Sabben-Clare, who will have been headmaster at the £16,000-a year-school for 15 years when he leaves, said: "I am delighted by the appointment. I think it's a great compliment to the school that it has attracted a person of such high national standing and reputation in the world of education.
"Dr Tate's knowledge and experience will be invaluable. I wish him and his wife every success and happiness during their time in Winchester."
Education secretary David Blunkett paid tribute to Dr Tate's work at the QCA.
He added: "In taking on this challenging new role as head of a historic school with a considerable reputation, I know Dr Tate will be a first-class headmaster. I know also that he is keen to forge closer links between the state and independent education sectors. I wish him every success."
