LAST week Brighton and Hove launched its bid for city status. But its claim to be the "natural" capital of the South provoked an angry reaction from former Southampton mayor Jack Candy who claimed Brighton could not compete with Southampton as the regions's main city.

In response the local newspaper in Brighton, The Argus, dispatched a reporter Paul Holden and photographer James Boardman eye up the competition.
