D STOOD for delightful and dynamic as the rink called D3 carried off the honours during the Hampshire County WBA's 65th anniversary tournament at Banister Park.
The successful foursome were Sheila Martin, Beryl Faithful, Valerie Snoop and Barbara Sutton. Nearly 100 players from Central, North, South and West Division were mixed in teams of four. The 24 rinks were divided into four groups, each side playing six ends in a round-robin group. Section winners:
A5: Marjorie Rowledge (Bass Alton), Cynthia Stevens (Cowplain), Rosemary Lester (Knyveton Gardens), Audrey Davis (Banister Park). C2: Margaret Jackson (Romsey), Mary Hines (Gosport), Peggy Walker (Lymington), Allyson Flint (Cove).
D3: Sheila Martin (Four Marks), Beryl Faithful (Canoe Lake), Valerie Snoop (Ringwood), Barbara Sutton (Griffin).
B4: B Marsh (Richmond Park, Lil Bradford (Thornycroft), Josephine Durrant (Emsworth), Christine Doig (Winchester Cons). In the semi-finals D3 defeated B4 5-3 and A5 beat C2 after an extra-end before D3 overcame A5 5-3 in the final.
County president Coleen Money invited 98 guests representing Hampshire officers, districts, associations and clubs to her club Milton Park for her President's Day.
Eighty players took part in a lighthearted game of bowls with a 'yardstick' deciding the number of shots scored by each team.
Following the game Mrs Money paid tribute to the hard work of the Milton Park members who made the day such a success and who had supported her as president of Portsmouth and District WBA in 1996 and as junior (1997) and senior (1998) vice-president and now as Hampshire president 1999.
Stella Waller of Fleet United reached the quarter-finals of the National Over-55s singles by beating Devon's Wendy Barnard who was champion in 1997 and 1998. Final stages are at Coventry on September 11-12.
