BROKENHUST Manor became the first English golf club to win the coveted European Club Team Championship in 1988. Now, 11 years on, they are looking for a repeat.

Brokenhurst won the Hampshire team title in June and now represent the county in the English Club Championship final at Moor Park on Friday and Saturday. If they win, they go to Italy in November to represent England in the European Club team Championship.

As in 1988, Brokenhurst boast a formidable line-up, spear-headed by evergreen Hampshire campaigner Kevin Weeks and his county teammates, the broth-ers Jon and Martin Young. Martin is in great form with top-six finishes in the recent Stoneham Trophy and Mike Smith Memorial Trophy events.

A year ago David Loveless entered the Bramshott Hill Junior Open as a 27-handicap also-ran. Last week he won the title with a gross 73!

Such has been the remarkable progress of Bramshott local boy Loveless that his handicap has been cut from 27 to 12 in just a year. And after winning last week, he has been cut to 10.8.

He won by two shots from Peter Hayball, a six-handi-capper from the Wellow club with another Wellow player Andrew Venning (6)third.

Next big event at the club is the Dibden Ford Men's Open, already fully booked, on Saturday.

Kris Iona, just 13, became the youngest winner of the Shanklin & Sandown Junior Championship with splendid rounds of 75 and 72. He was four shots to the good after the first round and answered Tom Guy's threatening 72 with the same score second time out. Bad news for other young club members is that Iona has five years more to go in the junior category.
