DANNY WILSON is to go back to the drawing board ahead of tomorrow's visit to The Dell in a bid to save Sheffield Wednesday's season from ruin.

The Owls have suffered their worst start to a season since they were relegated in 1989-90 with one draw and four defeats from their first five games - exactly the same as they had then.

Now Wednesday boss Wilson is set to keep things simple as the Yorkshire side look to move off the bottom.

"We've got to get back to basics because we're making mistakes in vital areas," he said.

"This is a big game for us now, we've got to be mentally tough and stick together and we will come through it. This is a test of character for us and we can't let our heads go down. We are going to come through it without a shadow of a doubt.

"When that first win comes everybody will relax and the confidence will come back. We are being punished for individual mistakes and we need to keep our first clean sheet.

"There's nobody more realistic about the situation that I am. This is a very tough league and we don't want to be adrift at this stage of the season.

"When you're not playing at your best everybody's got the relegation battle on their lips. But I'm very positive about it. The show must go on and we must keep our heads up."

As Saints know only too well from their own bad start last season, when things are going wrong your troubles will pile up.

Wednesday discovered that in their miserable midweek 2-0 home defeat by Derby when Wim Jonk got injured just after Wilson had used his third and final substitute.

Jonk limped off with an ankle injury, leaving Wednesday to play the final 14 minutes with only 10 men.

The Owls had earlier lost Des Walker (pictured left) with a hamstring problem and Gilles De Bilde with blurred vision and all three are doubtful for The Dell.

Already out were Andy Hinchcliffe (ten stitches in a cut below the knee), left winger Phil O'Donnell, a summer signing from Celtic (achilles), midfielder Danny Sonner (achilles) and Lee Briscoe (chest infection).
