NEW FOREST teenager Steve Lovell beat "one of the best goalkeepers in the business" to score his first goal in professional football at Fratton Park last night.

Lovell, 18, a £250,000 buy from AFC Bournemouth less than a fortnight ago, celebrated his Portsmouth home debut in goal-scoring style.

Playing only his second game in Pompey colours, Lovell beat Neville Southall, the former Wales and Everton goalkeeper, to score the second goal in a comfortable 3-0 Worthington Cup first round second leg victory over Torquay United.

"To put the ball past someone as famous as Southall on your home debut was a bit special," beamed Lovell.

"He's been one of the best around in his time and, being it was my first-ever goal, it will give me a very special memory."

Pompey manager Alan Ball was thrilled that his two teenage marksmen - Lovell and two-goal Luke Nightingale - scored all three goals which sank Torquay.

"They're the future. I'm hoping they'll grow up together and become a really potent force.

"It was the first time they had been blooded together in a home match and I know from the reception they got, the two lads did very well.

It's terrific," Ball said. But Lovell and Nightingale know they are only just learning their trade.

"We've been staying behind to do extra work together after training and I'm confident we can gell together . . . and get a few more goals yet," Lovell smiled.
