DIGGERS searching for the tomb of King Alfred have located two new finds of great archaeological significance.
The discoveries come after four weeks of digging at the site in River Park leisure centre, Winchester.
Their first find is evidence of stolen stone from internal buttresses of the walls of Hyde Abbey.
While this does not sound significant, project supervisor Peter Fairclough explained: "What we have found is evidence that these valuable stones from the 12th century were stolen."
The dig has also located three pieces of re-used stone taken from the Old or New Minsters.
The Minsters used to be located near the cathedral from the seventh century, but moved to the Hyde Abbey in 1110.
