GEORGE EVANS carded one of the most remarkable scores of this year or any year when he cruised round Brokenhurst Manor in 71. That's one over par and not that remarkable you might think - but it is for a chap of 87 coming up 88 years old!

His extra-ordinary effort at Brock included four birdies and Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Channel Islands president John Nettell, admitted: "It was an amazing effort. And I should know, I played with him.

Evans, a former club professional who is 88 next month always sets himself the target of shooting under his age when he plays.

Alongside his old friend George, Nettell is a spring chicken at 70 and his round of 69 in a four-ball which also included the former Ferndown professional Doug Sewell was something pretty special, too.

He modestly pointed out: "It's good to shoot a score under your age at our time of life but when it is 16 shots, it has got to be some kind of record," said Nettell.

As an amateur just after the war, Evans played off plus four. As a professional playing out of West Hill, he qualified for four Open Championships, competed in the British Masters and won the British Seniors Championship in 1963.

Evans, who puts his fitness down to "plenty of walking and plently of fresh air" still hits the ball 200 yards and has a pin-sharp short game.

It's not unusual for him to do ten shots below his age but occassionally he likes to put on a show, particularly with the county president and one of the finest tournament pros ever to grace the south coast (Sewell) in tow!
