GOSPORT road international turned time trialist Paul Rogers (VC St Raphael Waite Contracts) showed no signs of fatigue a week after winning the bronze medal in the national 12-hour championship.
But he confirmed after taking the honours in the Hampshire RC 30 at Emsworth that he has no plans to tackle the South of England Best All-Rounder Competition.
The 30-mile circuit took him 1 hour 5 minutes 45 seconds to complete, and though that was 38 seconds outside the race record set by his clubmate Chris Birch a year ago, it was 38 seconds too fast for Graeme Stirzaker (Anglia Sport Condor) from Droxford, who finished second.
A notable absentee from the event was Malcolm Cox of Hedge End. He withdrew suffering from a sore knee sustained as a result of helping Rogers lead the St Raphael club to the team championship in the 12-hour race.
Long distance racing has done nothing to blunt the speeds of two other southern cyclists.
National 24 hour champion, David Shepherd (Rother Valley CC) added almost four miles to the race record to win the Sussex 12-hour championship for a record fourth consecutive year, while the recent Exeter Wheelers 100 miles winner, James Clarke (Salisbury RC), spoilt the hopes of Casterbridge Hardy RT to provide the winner of its 25-mile time trial near Wimborne.
