A SOUTHAMPTON motorist was in intensive care today after a road accident which has left police baffled.

Malcolm Seagrave, 33, suffered serious leg and internal injuries when the N-reg Ford Transit van he was driving overturned on the westbound carriageway of the Redbridge flyover.

No other vehicles were involed.

A police spokesman said: "For some reason the van, which was heading into the city at the time, swerved to the left, spun round, hit the railings on the driver's side and turned onto its side.

"From witnesses there was no suggestion of speed and no obstruction on the road at the time."

Mr Seagrave, who was described as local to the city, was in a critical but stable condition today at Southampton General Hospital following emergency surgery.

Anyone who has information about the accident which occurred at 10.15pm is urged to contact Pc Nick Saunders at Lyndhurst police station on 01703 674205.
