FEARFUL parents in a Hampshire village have again called for traffic calming after the death of an eight-year-old boy.

Jonathan Moon died when the bike he was riding was in collision with a Suburu Legacy driven by a 73-year-old man at the junction of New Lane and Winchester Road in King's Somborne.

Police are investigating the accident but say that it is too early to give an indication whether speed was a factor.

But villagers have warned that speeding is worsening and that a tragedy was waiting to happen.

They say they gathered a petition two years ago asking for warning signs and speed humps but Hampshire County Council said the measures were unnecessary.

Mother-of-one Christine White, of Humbers View, said: "For two years we have been trying to have speed humps and warning signs but the council would not allow it.

"Now a little boy is dead and it might have been avoided. It should not take a tragedy for something to be done."

Debbie Scard, a mother of two young boys, of Scott Close, said: "Two weeks ago I stopped someone who was speeding through the village and told them children were playing and someone will be killed. "I know this boy died on the Winchester Road, but I fear for all the kids."

A county council spokeswoman said that when the petition was presented King's Somborne was not considered an accident blackspot.

Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the accident, which happened at about 5pm on Thursday. Anyone with any information should call 01256 405339.

Sgt Michelle Cook said: "It is too early to say whether speed was a factor. A full investigation is being undertaken.

"A couple of witnesses have come forward."
