JOHN BERESFORD would dearly love to be a fly on the wall in the Newcastle dressing room if his former club extend their horrendous run at The Dell tomorrow.
The Magpies have not won here since February 1972 and are under pressure after nine Premiership matches without a victory going back to Easter Saturday.
The Saints full-back knows only too well the nagging doubts there will be in the minds of his former teammates as they bid to beat the jinx.
And he still recalls with almost malicious glee the roasting dished out by Kevin Keegan after the Geordies collapsed in the last five minutes of this fixture in March 1995.
He said: "I wasn't playing that night but I remember we were cruising at a goal up with a few minutes left and I thought we were finally going to win here. Then Saints scored three!
"I wanted to see how Kevin Keegan reacted and I knew I had about 30 seconds to get from the directors box to the dressing room before the door was slammed shut. It was the fastest run I made all season.
"Footballers are a sadistic breed and I did not want to miss any of it - and Kevin did not disappoint as he tore a strip off everyone."
