TROND Soltvedt has completed his £300,000 move to Southampton after turning down a last-minute offer from his former club Rosenborg.
The Norwegian champions matched Saints' offer to Coventry but the 32-year-old midfielder declined the chance to return home.
Instead he signed a three-year deal at The Dell last night in time to come into contention for Sunday's televised clash at home to Newcastle.
He said: "There were a few things to discuss but everything is now sorted and I have put pen to paper.
"I was a bit surprised to get a phone call from Rosenborg. Their manager asked me if I wanted to come back but I told him I preferred to stay in England.
"Some people might say I am swapping one relegation battle for another but I don't see it that way. Southampton have some quality players and can do well this season and I am looking forward to being part of it."
Soltvedt could be thrust straight into the starting line-up with Chris Marsden still nursing a toe injury, although X-Rays have shown there is no break.
Manager Dave Jones confirmed: "He will definitely be in the squad and I am delighted the deal has gone through. I am surprised Coventry were prepared to let him go - and I think he was too.
"We have got him for a very good price and he will give us extra options in midfield."
There are still a few tickets left on general sale for Sunday's game. Seats for the August 28 visit of Sheffield Wednesday will go on sale to members at 10am on Sunday.
Ruud Gullit is believed to be considering coming out of retirement to play for injury-hit Newcastle against Saints on Sunday. The Magpies boss may be forced to name himself on the substitutes' bench.
Ken Monkou is considering an offer to join Division 1 Huddersfield after turning down a one-year deal at The Dell to become a Bosman free.
