THE lure of the sea still calls for vet-eran Gosport submariner Ray Critchall - but on shore instead of the ocean's waves.
Even though he retired some years ago he keeps up with the naval life he loved so much by acting as a guide at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, in Haslar Jetty Road, Gosport.
And following a fundraising walk, he handed over a cheque for £169 to the new chairman of the museum's board of trustees, Vice-Admiral Sir Roy Newman.
The former submariner chief cook raised the money through a sponsored walk from Segensworth to Gosport to help finance the restoration of the Navy's first submarine and redevelopment of the museum site.
Ray, of St Vincent Road, Gosport, became a volunteer guide after retiring from the Navy last year.
Sir Roy, formerly Flag Officer Sea Training and Flag Officer Plymouth, is now president of the Royal Naval Association.
