BEFORE saddling Salford Express in Saturday's Vodafone Derby, Hampshire trainer David Elsworth has a mission closer to home - trying to win the Southern Daily Echo Handicap at Goodwood tomorrow evening.
That grand old campaigner Law Commission represents Elsworth in the £10,000 race at 8pm over seven furlongs and has a live chance of bringing the cash back to Whitsbury.
Nine years old he may be but Law Commission is no back-number as he proved last week when scoring at Newbury. That success means he carries a 6lb penalty at Goodwood but even that may not stop the in-form chestnut who is to be ridden by regular jockey Richard Quinn.
Over 1,000 Echo readers will swell the crowd tomorrow, many of them having taken advantage of our two-for-one ticket entry offer that appeared in the paper last month.
Meanwhile, Salford Express continues his build-up towards The Derby and yesterday was partnered by big-race jockey Pat Eddery for an exercise gallop. The colt is currently 12-1 (Coral, Ladbrokes)for Epsom.
Said Elsworth: "I am very pleased with him. He is an easy horse to train who never overdoes it at home but who becomes a real fighter on the racetrack. I am sure he'll run a good race."
