TEAM Solent will be relying on some fire from their Welsh dragon in tomorrow's British Men's League Division 2 opener at Stafford.
Carmarthen-born sprinter Jamie Henthorn is on a hot streak of form having returned from training in Los Angeles to strike double gold at the recent BUSA Championships at Bedford.
A student at the University of Wales, Henthorn won the universi-ties' 100/200 metres titles in 10.40 and 20.99 seconds and now spear-heads a powerful-looking Solent sprint section at Rowley Park alongside exciting 400m prospects Pete Brend and Chris Bennett.
Brend was a hat-trick hero at last weekend's Devon County Championships where times of 11.0, 22.8 and 48.7 wrapped up the senior men's 100/200/400m treble, while 18-year-old Bennett struck 200m gold in 21.9 at the Hampshire Championships at Portsmouth.
Another Mountbatten Centre hero, James Parker, is due to make his club debut in the 800m at Stafford having just been crowned Hampshire senior men's champion. But the 19-year-old, who only recently joined Team Solent after moving back to his native Winchester from Millfield School, may have to pull out due to a slight quad strain.
Three other Solent newcomers should feature tomorrow as Stuart Fricker's men attempt to erase the disappointment of the last two seasons when they have missed the Division 1 promotion boat by the skin of their teeth.
Former Bournemouth athlete Ian Cawley should be a force to be reckoned with in the sprint hurdles, Danny Turner - signed from Havant - won the Hampshire senior men's high jump title with a 2.10 clearance and ex-Andover all-rounder Paul Berry underlined his versatility by claiming the javelin, high jump and shot putt titles at the Wiltshire County Championships.
Shot putter Simon Fricker is a definite non-starter having broken his ankle and there are doubts over long/triple jumper James Lever who strained his back at the BUSA Championships where he took triple jump bronze with 15.32.
l Team Solent's table-topping B team travel to Catford in the Southern Men's League Division 1. Their main opponents should be Woking, who also won their first match.
Wayne Martin equalled the senior men's 100m Championship best of 11.2 seconds at the Wiltshire County Championships in Salisbury. The Team Solent sprinter also won the 200m and 400m titles (22.9/50.0).
