ESSEX road and track international Matthew Illingworth (Linda McCartney PRT) mastered difficult cross winds to take gold in the British ten-mile championship at Warmwell, Dorset.
Illingworth beat Michael Hutchinson (Cambridge University CC) by 15 seconds, coming home in a time of 20 mins 17 secs after establishing his authority in the first half of the race.
The 1995 champion, Richard Prebble (Team Clean Fresh Start), from Old Basing, won a place on the podium as leader of the winning team.
Best Hampshire rider behind Prebble were Graeme Stirzaker (Anglia Sport Condor), who was tenth in 21.33s. Yorkshire's ex-world hour record holder Yvonne McGregor (Adidas Sci-Con RT) surprised no-one by winning her fourth women's national title over the same dis-tance in wet and windy conditions near Alton, clocking 21.53. Isle of Wight's Dawn Courage (Vectis Roads CC) was best local rider with a time of 25.08.
The first Sandie Radford Memorial Race, organised by Antelope RT on a five-mile circuit in the New Forest, was claimed by 19 year-old Mark Standhaft (Bournemouth Arrow Fircroft Hotel), now fully recovered from life threatening leukemia.
