Pat Sutton
ATHERLEY duo Marlene Kemp and Pat Sutton have been called up to play in the England trials at Leamington Spa.
Mrs Kemp was lead and Mrs Sutton was skip in the Atherley rink that won the national fours title at Leamington last year and they return to the Mecca of English women's bowls on Sunday, May 16, hoping that an impressive performance in front of the selectors will earn them a place in the team for the Home International series at Belfast during June.
In any event the pair will be playing in Belfast along with clubmates Maggie Playle and Marion Collins when they fly the England flag in the fours section of the British Isles Championships. Hampshire have a third bowler in the national trials in seasoned England player Wendy Line, an indoor member at Atherley but whose outdoor club is Southampton Women.
Hampshire meet Devon in the preliminary round of the Johns Trophy on May 25 and in the build-up towards the match at Yatton in Somerset they are playing Surrey in a friendly at Ashstead a week today and hold a county trial at Pirrie Park on May 16 (10am).
Hampshire, whose president this year is Coleen Money from the Milton Park club, face Cornwall in the preliminary round of the double rink Championship at Chudleigh, Devon, on Thursday, June 10.
