YOUNGSTERS from Southampton's award-winning junior neighbourhood warden scheme dropped into one of the city's fire stations for a lesson in fire safety in the home.

About 60 children were given a VIP tour of Hightown fire station in Thornhill, where they met up with fire safety officers.

They were also given the chance to crawl through the darkened smoke chamber used by firefighters during training to illustrate how frightening and dangerous a fire in the home can be.

City council Cabinet member for communities and regeneration Councillor Liz Mizon said: "I am delighted that our junior wardens learned more about the dangers of fire and the important work our firefighters do.

"These are important lessons and will help them on the road to becoming responsible citizens."
