People will soon have a chance to judge for themselves two alternative schemes to change the face of Winchester city centre.
The City of Winchester Trust is planning to exhibit plans for the Broadway/Friarsgate areas by the council's development partner, Thornfield Properties, and rival London & Henley. The display will be in the Heritage Centre, Upper Brook Street, over the weekend of April 29-30, between 10am and 4pm.
Trust chairman, Pat Edwards, said the exhibition was aimed at members, but all were welcome. "The redevelopment is the most important thing to have happened to Winchester for more than 100 years. It is a much bigger site than the Brooks Centre.
Architect, Huw Thomas, has voiced his criticism of the Thornfield scheme in the trust's latest newsletter. He says the tallest block is too big at six storeys and would affect the setting of the cathedral. He also says elevations of the buildings show "none of the character found in Winchester street scenes".
