A STICKY situation in Andover has been wiped clean as Test Valley Borough Council finished the mucky task of clearing chewing gum from the pavement.
The borough council took a total of three weeks to clear the gum-ridden pavements in the town centre compared to only three days spent tackling the streets of Romsey.
The colossal clear-up cost taxpayers £13,500 and has included all the pavements surrounding the High Street.
According to a recent town cleanliness survey, chewing gum problems are worse around takeaways, pubs and clubs, seating areas and shopping centres entrances.
Dropping litter is an offence and the survey found, due to the amount of gum, people are not adhering to the law or simply do not class chewing gum as rubbish.
Gum does not break down over time so it gradually accumulates and becomes unsightly.
In an effort to enforce the message, if an individual is caught dropping chewing gum on the pavement, they now face a £50 fixed penalty notice.
