MOUNTBATTEN School pupils Christina Hargreaves and Sophie Mead are celebrating both individual and team success in the Norwich Union Regional Sports Hall Athletics Championships.
Following a successful winter season in the Hampshire Athletics Association's Sports Hall Athletics Multi-Events Championship - Christina finished third and Sophie sixth - the girls were selected for the Hampshire team to compete against Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Sussex and the Isle of Wight in the regional championships at, appropriately enough, the Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth.
Both girls are in Year 9 at the Mountbatten School and are members of Team Southampton.
Sophie, a potential sprint champion, is coached by former international athlete Todd Bennett, while Christina is developing into a fine all-round athlete with the potential to be an excellent sprint hurdler.
At Portsmouth Christina competed in the speed bounce, vertical jump and the 4 x 2 lap relay, while Sophie competed in the vertical jump, speed bounce and the 8 lap parlauf relay.
In the individual events, Christina won a bronze medal with personal best performance of 83 in the speed bounce, and finished in 12th position overall.
Sophie won a silver medal in the standing long jump (2m22) and struck gold, with her partner Tiffany Markham, in the 8-lap parlauf. She finished eighth in the overall standings.
The girls will travel with the rest of the county team, next month, to the National Championships at the National Indoor Arena, Birmingham.
