GARETH BALE is relishing his Saints first team debut but admits it's coming sooner than he expected.
The 16-year-old Welsh under-21 international left back will be handed his first senior start over the Easter weekend, most likely against Millwall at St Mary's on Monday.
But he has also been told he will be in the party that travels to Stoke tomorrow and has an outside chance of making his debut at the Britannia Stadium.
Bale could hardly stop grinning at the prospect of his first Saints appearance and raved: "I wasn't really expecting it but I've been playing well this season and finally caught the gaffer's eye and I've got a chance.
"He'll probably just give us a chance now we're safe.
"There's nothing really to lose now and next season we need to push for promotion and get to the Premiership."
Bale has been an impressive member of the under-18 side that reached the FA Youth Cup semi-final this season and has also played for the reserves on numerous occasions.
George Burley says Bale "has a big future at the club" and is clearly excited by the young prospect.
Saints securing safety in the Championship is allowing Burley the chance to experiment somewhat and look at other players, with 18-year-old goalscoring sensation David McGoldrick also set to make his debut over the weekend.
Like Bale, 39-goal McGoldrick's first start will most probably come against Millwall on Monday but he will travel to Stoke.
Bale is trying to make sure he keeps his feet on the ground and seizes an opportunity he readily admits he wasn't expecting.
"The chance has come sooner than I expected and it's a big bonus," he said.
"It's a really good bonus. I've been working hard in the under-18s and the reserves.
"I've been playing well this season and had a really good season. I want to keep building on it and get to the top level as soon as possible.
"Once they're safe, he'll give other people more chances.
"Relegation is not a problem now and next season is the big season."
He added: "I feel more excited than nervous at the moment but, as the time comes up, I'll probably get more nervous."
