PUPILS have been casting votes at a Basingstoke school to select their own school council leader.
All children and staff at Manor Field Junior School, in Brighton Hill, took part in the election to mark Local Democracy Week, which aims to promote citizenship and involvement in local communities.
Following a week of campaigning and balloting, Year 5 pupil Kellie Barrier was announced as school council leader during a special assembly after receiving the most votes.
Kellie was one of four candidates standing for election alongside fellow new council members David Seddon in Year 5, and Deanna Kempster and Liam Sargent in Year 6.
Before the winner was announced, all the candidates shook hands and pupils put their hands up to give suggestions on the qualities needed for a good leader. These included being responsible, trustworthy and pro-active.
Basingstoke and Deane borough councillor Sheila Rowland, ward member for Brighton Hill North, went along to present each member of the school council with a special badge.
Along with Kellie, David, Deanna and Liam, the council includes Jack Elie, Tim Wolf and Jake Neller from the lower school.
Year 6 teacher Kirstie-Anne Sangway, who is also assistant headteacher, said: "The council will help make decisions and report to their classes. These could be any changes we make on policies or improvements made to the playground."
She added: "It's a serious council. It's not just playing at being a council, and they will help make real decisions."
