AN INFANT school has been praised for its high-quality teaching and for helping make children feel happy, secure and confident in their learning.

Manor Field Infant School, in Haydn Road, Brighton Hill, Basingstoke, received a glowing report from lead Ofsted inspector Mike Thompson, who visited the school along with two colleges during a two-day intensive visit in the autumn term.

In his report, Mr Thompson states that parents and the 148 pupils, aged between five and seven, clearly hold the school in high regard and that the quality of education, including teaching, is good.

He also praises the behaviour of pupils and their keenness to learn, as well as the leadership of headteacher Penny Bullough and the commitment of the staff and governing body.

In the report, Mr Thompson states: "All pupils are warmly welcomed and equally valued. Teachers know their pupils extremely well and are very good at using what they know to ensure that they make good progress in their learning. Pupils are very well cared-for and feel secure and happy."

Mrs Bullough said: "We are delighted. The inspectors said so many positive things."

She added: "The report makes it clear that we are meeting the needs of all our children, being increasingly successful in challenging our more able pupils as well as supporting those who need extra help.

"We were touched by the level of confidence shown in us by our parents as well as our children, and that makes it all worthwhile."

Mr Thompson also notes there is a strong commitment to continuous improvement at all levels within the school, leaving it well-placed to make further progress, but he has advised staff to ensure pupils improve their speaking skills and awareness of other cultural traditions.
