IT'S one of the iconic movies of British cinema - and now a group of BCOT students is set to bring a slice of The Italian Job to life in Basingstoke.

Eighteen National Diploma students of Motor Sport are renovating three original

Mini Coopers to replicate the cars used in the cult 1960s classic, which starred Michael Caine and Noel Coward.

The Minis will be showcased at three events this summer, and the first car is due to be ready for the Basingstoke Adult Learner Awards in May.

"The idea for The Italian Job theme came after the students got hold of two Minis to renovate," said Beverley Flanagan, BCOT assistant principal, business and communications. "There was so much enthusiasm generated within the group that another car was quickly added to the project.

"The first year of the project is all about getting the cars safe, roadworthy and looking good. Next year, the focus will be on modifying the cars and entering them into races as there are many race series for Minis locally, nationally and internationally.

"The students will not only gain their BTEC National Diploma but are also set to make a big impact on the local area, picking up skills such as marketing and fundraising.

"The biggest challenge facing the group is completing the work on time as the cars were in a very bad state. This, however, has made the group even more determined to succeed."

The project has already attracted funding from Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council as the students have been awarded £2,000.

Councillor George Hood, Cabinet member for employment, skills and learning, said: "The Italian Job is an innovative, exciting project.

"As well as teaching the students valuable skills they can use in the automotive industry, the scheme will also help them learn skills that they will use later in life, even if they decide to change careers."

As well as making a presentation to council chiefs, the students are holding meetings with local businesses in a bid to secure more backing for the project. The college has also received interest in the scheme from national Mini magazines and is contacting the Top Gear television programme.
