MOTTISFONT aim to complete the first leg of a possible treble at St Mary's tonight.

The Hampshire League leaders take on VTFC Reserves in the final of the Southampton Senior Cup (7.30pm).

They also need just four points from their last four league games to win the Hampshire League.

Martin Thomas' men are also through to the Hampshire League Trophyman Cup final, where they play Sporting BTC at Aerostructures on May 3.

It's been a remarkable season for the club, whose only defeats have come in the Hampshire Intermediate Cup (3-0 to Colden Common) and Andover Floodlit Cup (3-1 to Stockbridge).

Not that Mottisfont are any strangers to success.

This is Thomas's sixth season in charge and last term was the first in which they failed to win any silverware.

Tonight is only Mottisfont's second ever Southampton Senior Cup final - the first came 40 years ago when they lost 1-0 to Pirelli at The Dell.

And it's ironic they face VTFC Reserves tonight. It was their first team who twice knocked Motts out in the semi-final stage in 2002 and 2004.

Indeed, VTFC's second string have reached the final just two years after their first team won the trophy for the last time before moving up to the Wessex League.

VT Reserves are currently fourth in the Wessex League Combination 1, which is a higher level than Motts play at.

Both tonight's finalists have scored exactly 100 league goals this season - though while VT have managed it in 38 games, Motts have done it in 28!

"We're quite confident," said Thomas.

"We've played Winchester and BAT, who are also doing well in VT's league, and beaten them.

"I always thought we'd have a good season.

"The only reason we didn't do too well last season was because we lost a lot of players after the leagues were re-organised.

"Then when we got some of them back towards the end, we finished well."

VT recently reached the semi-finals of the Hampshire Intermediate Cup, losing 3-0 to the Colden Common team who knocked Motts out of the same competition.
