TEACHERS have been given extra help when it comes to planning safer school trips thanks to researchers at Southampton University.
They have developed an interactive guide that allows teachers to prepare risk assessments ahead of trips.
Standard forms are provided in the new software package which can be used to cover trips ranging from museum visits to skiing holidays.
There are also hints, tips and suggestions for planning successful and safe excursions.
A team of researchers from the university's school of education worked with schools, local education authorities and the British Safety Council to draw up the guide.
Keith Smith, who led the team, said: "Statistically educational visits are very safe environments for children but many teachers and group leaders are concerned with health and safety issues and would like help in meeting the demands made on them.
"Teachers who have piloted the guide are full of praise for it."
