STUDENTS in Winchester are some of the most sensible around when it comes to drinking, a new survey has revealed.

Research by the National Union of Students shows that young people are beginning to heed warnings about drinking.

In fact 56 per cent of students at The University of Winchester said they had reduced their weekly alcohol consumption after learning more about the effects of excessive drinking.

The results came as the student union bar at the Sparkford Road college also gained accreditation under the NUS's Best Bar None programme for the sensible drinking policies in place at the bar.

A formal award was presented to union bosses in Winchester by Channel 4 news reader Krishnan Guru Murphy earlier this month.

A spokesman for the union in Winchester, added: "We are delighted that our efforts to encourage sensible drinking have been recognised.

"Nobody wants to spoil people having fun, but neither do we want people putting themselves at risk."
