North Hants Senior Cup Final - Colden Common Res 1 Stockbridge 2 (aet) STOCKS had a second piece of silverware to put in their trophy cabinet on Wednesday night, but made hard work of beating a Colden Common side from Wessex Combination 2 - three divisions below Stocks.
Stocks had already won the Andover Open Cup, and on paper were clear favourites to make it a Cup double on a bumpy, bare Portway Stadium pitch.
But it was Common who were quickest out of the blocks. Simon Waters drew a fine save out of Stocks keeper Carl Mumford in a one-on-one, and Mumford denied Peter Winkle and Paul Rood in a frantic goalmouth scramble.
Stocks finally woke up, but it took them until just before half-time - when Sam Coleman scored - to make their superior status tell.
Stockbridge were on top for much of the second half, but their finishing was woeful. Dean Savage headed wide of an open goal, and Lewis Bain fired wide when similarly well placed, while Common keeper Jamie Flood impressed with a string of good saves.
Five minutes from time Common equalised when when Rood was upended on the edge of the box and Max Costick smashed home the resulting free-kick.
In extra time Common had a 'goal' disallowed for offside, and Mumford saved with his legs in a one-on-one from Waters. But Stocks made their pedigree tell four minutes from time when Toby Steele hit the angle of post and bar, and Gavin Richards tucked away the rebound.
Richards and Keith Nicholls were the star performers for the winners. Common, meanwhile, gave a highly creditable performance and can hold their heads high after giving their opponents such a tough test.
