Winchester lay down gauntlet in first race

Natalie Cain claimed victory in the women's race, staged over a two-lap 4.75-mile course at the Royal Victoria Country Park, while Gavin Smith made it a Winchester double by claiming victory in the men's race.

Conditions were good for the event, staged over a slightly changed course from previous years consisting of parkland, woodland and a tarmac stretch along the shore by Southampton Water.

Smith, who recently joined Winchester from Aldershot, Farnham & District, was given a stern test by Stubbington Green Runners' Mark Le Gassick, who currently heads the Hampshire Road Race League standings.

Le Gassick's Stubbington team were making their RR10 debut and he trailed Smith by ten seconds at the finish.

Team Southampton's Neil Phillips was third, with Mike Cummings from Hardley Road Runners fourth, and Le Gassick's Stubbington teammate, Tony Allen checked into the finish in fifth spot to give the club third place in the team standings.

Winchester's men, who were champions in 2005, were second, but it was New Forest Runners, led by sixth-placed Steve Wright and who placed four runners in the top ten, who came out on top.

For the ladies, Cain, who was making her RR10 debut, saw off the challenge of the New Forest's Erica Fogg, with Hayley Pointer from Team Southampton in third and Katherine Jones from Winchester was fourth. Pointer was runner-up in the 2005 RR10 ladies' championship.

However, it was Lordshill Road Runners, led home by fifth-placed Amanda Kingsley, who took team honours on the opening evening of the ten-race series, with Winchester second and New Forest third.

The race was organised by Southampton Running Club - ladies team champions a year ago and second in the men's event. The city club are sure to have a major say in the shape of this year's RR10 when their runners compete in the next round, on May 3 at the Longdown Inclosure at Ashurst (7.15pm).
