NEW Romsey Golf Club captain Brian Saunders kept on the straight and narrow when he officially teed off his season at the helm with the customary driving-in ceremony on Easter Sunday.
Under the full glare of the media spotlight and watching club members, Saunders showed a steely nerve to find the first fairway with his drive.
"Beforehand I was a bit nervous so I was very happy to hit a solid shot which finished in the right half of the fairway - I just hope I can keep it up for the rest of my time as captain," said a relieved Saunders.
Outgoing club captain Mike Read retrieved Saunders' ball for the day's first prize, while - in what is believed to be a club first - Mike's wife Jill retrieved the tee shot of new lady captain Sheila Thompson.
The drive-in was followed by a mixed greensome Stableford which was won on countback by Marjorie Avery and Colin Beale (39 points). A putting competition in aid of the captain's charity, Naomi House childrens' hospice, raised £58.
