THE extent of George Burley's summer rebuilding will be evident next week when he announces his retained list.

Around half of his squad is either out of contract this summer or at the end of their loan agreements.

Of the six who were on loan, it appears only striker Grzegorz Rasiak will stay permanently.

And Burley could be left with David Prutton as his only senior midfielder if he decides not to offerlong serving Matt Oakley or Djamel Belmadi new contracts.

Saints announced yesterday that Kamil Kosowski, Darren Potter and Jermaine Wright will all return to their parent clubs once the season ends.

Of the other midfielders at St Mary's, Yoann Folly and youngster Simon Gillett are both out of contract with Folly likely to stay at Sheffield Wednesday with Paul Sturrock.

Michael Svensson and Marian Pahars join Oakley in a trio of big names whose Saints futures could be coming to an end.

Svensson has yet to show Burley what he can do due to ongoing knee problems while Pahars has endured another injury-jinxed campaign.

In all, 12 players are out of contract, including two - academy graduates Craig Richards and Eddie Anaclet - who have never played in the first team.

But while there could be many players leaving - the second St Mary's exodus of the year after 14 players exited in January - one forgotten man could return.

Belgian defender Jelle Van Damme, signed by Sturrock for £2m in the summer of 2004, has been on loan to Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen all season.

He is, however, expected to make the move permanent with Jim Brennan having impressed in the left-back role. Though Brennan is one of the dozen out of contract, it would be a shock if Burley didn't offer him a new deal.

Of the 17 players who have played in the first team this season who are NOT out of contract, only three - Claus Lundekvam, Danny Higginbotham and David Prutton - have made over 50 appearances for the club. That statistic alone emphasises the remarkable change of personnel that has taken place at Saints in the last two years.
