Winchester Tennis and Squash Club celebrates 100 years of existence in 2006 and a special day was organised last Sunday to mark the occasion.
The club organised morning events for members, and these were a great success. Adult and junior members took part in a mixed doubles tennis tournament, team squash singles and doubles and the fitness members ran 100 miles (close to four marathons) in two hours using the club treadmills.
In the afternoon the club opened its doors to the general public, and there was a great turnout. There were hundreds of visitors on the day taking the opportunity to visit the club.
Around 50 children took part in free tennis and squash coaching clinics, while many more had a go at archery. The club had an archery section many years ago, and Winchester Archery Club were more than happy to come along and introduce the sport to members and visitors alike.
Many members as well as Winchester University Students, who had helped with the planning of the event, turned up in period dress on the day.
All in all it was a successful day, creating lots of awareness of the club and hopefully encouraging many more youngsters to take up the sports of tennis and squash.
