CAMPAIGNERS have reacted with fury after a teenager who ruthlessly ripped off a trusting pensioner of thousands of pounds was spared an immediate prison sentence.
They condemned the decision not to send Wayne Whittaker to jail after his deceit left his elderly victim facing the prospect of losing her home.
Southampton Crown Court was told how the 83-year-old Romsey victim - referred to in court as "Ms Smith" was approached by 19-year-old Whittaker who claimed to be the son of a handyman who had done work for her.
Ms Smith thought Whittaker had "a nice manner" but behind the charming exterior, there lay a scheming conman who ripped her off for more than £4,000 by grossly overcharging for unprofessional work.
