A Paul Hilton hat-trick, coupled with two successful penalty flicks by Wayne Shepherd, swept Trojans to a 5-2 Festival Place-sponsored Hampshire Cup final triumph over much fancied Havant at Chapel Gate.

It was Trojans' first cup triumph in 13 years - penalty ace Shepherd having ironically played in the last Stoneham triumph in 1993.

The victory has put Trojans in great spirits to retain the England Hockey Trophy against Banbury at East Grinstead on May 20.

Havant paraded the bulk of their National South League championship winning side, but were rocked by two Trojans goals inside the opening 11 minutes.

Hilton fired the first after picking up a long aerial pass from Shepherd, who made it 2-0 by converting his first penalty after Hilton had been illegally stick-tackled.

When Hilton broke away to make it 3-0 before half-time, it appeared all over bar the proverbial shouting.

But, initially denied by two fine saves by Trojans goalkeeper Steve Cole, Havant hit back with Andy Galliers converting a penalty flick which appeared to have been awarded for obstruction.

Sadly, the standard of umpiring did not reach any great standard and both sets of players were often left confused by decisions.

Reduced to ten men when John Jauncey was 'yellow carded', Trojans were hit again when Ben Allberry's rasping cross shot flew past Cole into the top corner.

Trojans' response was immediate.

Dicky Newnham, who had a fine game in midfield, sent Colin French away on the left to set up Hilton's hat-trick goal.

Less than five minutes later Trojans settled it. Galliers impeded Hilton and Shepherd tucked away the cup-clinching penalty flick.
