GEORGE Burley believes Marian Pahars "has got many years left in him" - even though the Latvian striker has been released after over seven years at Saints.
The 29-year-old has paid the price for almost four seasons of non-stop injuries.
Pahars has only made 20 league and cup starts, plus another 16 as a sub, since the start of the 2002/03 campaign.
"Marian was a tough decision to make because of his injury problems over the last two or three years," said Burley.
"I've never seen the best of him and a fresh challenge will do Marian the world of good.
"It's been a frustrating period for him too.
"At the end of the day he hasn't been available enough and hasn't got back to the form of four or five years ago.
"But I'm sure he's got many years left in him.
Pahars admitted to shedding a tear when Burley told him his Saints career was over
"I was crying when the manager told me. I did not agree with his decision but there is nothing I can do about it," said the man who scored 45 goals in 127 starts and 29 sub appearances for the club.
"I was expecting to at least talk about a new deal.
"I was expecting I would have to cut my salary by two or three times.
"I thought I would have to sign for a year or even six months and prove myself, but there was nothing at all.
"I would have done anything to have stayed - I am shocked.
"I am not going to blame anyone but it is very hard to accept.
"I am a very emotional person and this is something I can't get my head round.
"I still keep thinking about next season and how Southampton are going back to the Premiership - but I won't be part of it."
He added: "I had a great rapport with the supporters who will for ever be in my heart.
"I was glad I got chance to come onto the pitch after Sunday's game to wave to them and say goodbye, but it was very hard and very emotional for me.
"I will miss everyone very much. This is my home now and I have no idea right now what I will do.
"There has been some interest from a few clubs here or back home or even in Moscow but I have not thought about that because I never really thought I would have to leave.
"I can't imagine what it will be like not to be here next season. It is a big shock for me and I still can't believe it."
